چکیده

A new counterflow virtual impactor (CVI) inlet is introduced with details of its design, laboratory characterisation tests and deployment on an aircraft during the 2011 Eastern Pacific Emitted Aerosol Cloud Experiment (EPEACE). The CVI inlet addresses three key issues in previous designs; in particular, the inlet operates with: (i) negligible organic contamination; (ii) a significant sample flow rate to downstream instruments (∼15 l min−1) that reduces the need for dilution; and (iii) a high level of accessibility to the probe interior for cleaning. Wind tunnel experiments characterised the cut size of sampled droplets and the particle size-dependent transmission efficiency in various parts of the probe. For a range of counter-flow rates and air velocities, the measured cut size was between 8.7–13.1 μm. The mean percentage error between cut size measurements and predictions from aerodynamic drag theory is 1.7 %. The CVI was deployed on the Center for Interdisciplinary Remotely Piloted Aircraft Studies (CIRPAS) Twin Otter for thirty flights during E-PEACE to study aerosol-cloud-radiation interactions off the central coast of California in July and August 2011. Results are reported to assess the performance of the inlet including comparisons of particle number concentration downstream of the CVI and cloud drop number concentration measured by two independent aircraft probes. Measurements downstream of the CVI are also examined from one representative case flight coordinated with shipboard-emitted smoke that was intercepted in cloud by the Twin Otter.

Wake Capture, Particle Breakup and Other Artifacts Associated with Counterflow Virtual Impaction

Counterflow virtual impaction is used to inertially separate cloud elements from un-activated aerosol. Previous airborne, ground-based and laboratory studies using this technique exhibit artifacts that are not fully explained by impaction theory. We have performed laboratory studies that show small particles can be carried across the inertial barrier of the counterflow by collision and/or coale...

Analysis of cloud condensation nuclei composition and growth kinetics using a pumped counterflow virtual impactor and aerosol mass spectrometer

We present a new method of determining the size and composition of CCN-active aerosol particles. Method utility is illustrated through a series of ambient measurements. A continuous-flow thermal-gradient diffusion chamber (TGDC), pumped counterflow virtual impactor (PCVI), and Aerodyne time-of-flight mass spectrometer (AMS) are operated in series. Ambient particles are sampled into the TGDC, wh...

Effects of velocity and particles load on efficiency of cyclone in the stone crushing units at azendarian area.

BACKGROUND The traditional cyclone has been developed for the removal of airborne silica particles from local exhaust ventilation (LEV). The objective of this research was to evaluate the effects of velocity and particles load on efficiency of cyclone in the Stone Crushing Units at Azendarian Area. METHODS After the designing and installing the traditional cyclone, downstream and upstream sam...

Next generation pharmaceutical impactor (a new impactor for pharmaceutical inhaler testing). Part I: Design.

A new cascade impactor has been designed specifically for pharmaceutical inhaler testing. This impactor, called the Next Generation Pharmaceutical Impactor (NGI), has seven stages and is intended to operate at any inlet flow rate between 30 and 100 L/min. It spans a cut size (D50) range from 0.54-microm to 11.7-microm aerodynamic diameter at 30 L/min and 0.24 microm to 6.12 microm at 100 L/min....
